Port Macquarie at a Glance

Port Macquarie is located on the northern New South Wales coast, about 390 kilometres north of Sydney. The population exceeds 70 000, but in busy tourist times it can swell to significantly more than this. Built on the banks of the beautiful Hastings River, and with a large number of beaches nearby, its an ideal place to escape for a quiet weekend away. However, the number of attractions in and near the town means that no matter how long your holiday you will never be bored! The best way to get around town and to explore further afield is to hire a car from Rent New Cars and do a bit of touring in comfort and style!

Ideas for Visitors to Port Macquaire
  1. Watersports are very popular and highly encouraged in the town. The beaches are all very surfer friendly with a good swell, more diverse sports such as kite surfing and wind sailing are also common. Many hire a boat and use it to explore the coastline and find secluded spots away from the crowd.
  2. Much of the local population and may visitors who come here are devoted to fishing. There is a great diversity of spots to choose from, estuarine, river and coastal. If you want the really big fish then deep sea fishing charters are available that will take you on day or half day trips out into the ocean.
  3. Pay a visit to the Billabong Koala Park to get up close and personal with the cuddly Australian icon, the koala. There are over 50 other species of animals here as well, and you can get photographed with the koalas and the Black Handed Spider Monkeys.
  4. The beaches of Port Macquarie are a highlight for any visitor. There are plenty to choose from, all offering free parking and barbeque facilities, with lifeguard patrols in the high season. Lighthouse Beach and Town Beach are especially popular.
  5. The beautiful and natural surroundings of the town lend themselves perfectly to bushwalking of all descriptions. Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park has some very popular marked trails.
