Albury at a Glance

Situated on the state border halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, Albury is a large regional hub that supports around 100 000 people together with its twin city of Wodonga. Built in the busiest transport corridor in Australia, it is a vibrant and happening city. It can just as easily be relaxed and laid back, with the Murray River being the basis for plenty of recreational activity. A temperate climate with hot summers and mild winters adds to the holiday atmosphere of Albury, an atmosphere that the freedom of your hire car will allow you to fully appreciate.

Ideas for Visitors to Albury
  1. Lake Hume is a popular place for a weekend away. Only minutes away from Albury, this large artificial lake on the River Murray is wide and flat, making it ideal for water skiing and boating. Grassy banks complete with picnic and barbeque areas are the perfect spot for a relaxing day by the water.
  2. The Wonga Wetlands are an environmental development on the floodplains of the Murray River, and are designed to use reclaimed water to promote the natural flow of the river. They are the home to many bird species and native animals who would otherwise have had to move away.
  3. The Ettamogah Wildlife Sanctuary is a few minutes drive north of the city. Take guided tours of the large groups of native animals that have found a home here. It is especially geared towards entertaining young kids, so there are lots of activities for youngsters. But that doesn't mean that adults won't enjoy themselves!
  4. Really explore the Murray RIver by hiring some bicycles and riding down the Murray River Trail. It offers over 17 kilometres of tracks in a series of loops, so you can decide which parts to take and which to skip. The excellent views of the river and the peaceful atmosphere are worth the exercise.
  5. Immerse yourself in the arts and crafts culture of the region with a visit to the Albury Regional Museum. It is home to permanent local exhibitions as well as travelling displays from all over the world, and is an educational and fun outing.
